One Sibling Will See All the Funerals

One of your siblings will see all the funerals.

One will see none.
And one won’t have any of you at theirs.
Because that’s how life works.
Someone goes first.
Someone goes last.
And someone leaves before anyone is ready.
It’s a strange thing to think about until you realize how real it is.
Within every family, there’s a sibling who will have to bury the others…
a sibling who will never have to feel that pain…
and a sibling who won’t have their brother or sister standing at their funeral
because they passed too soon.
It puts life into perspective, doesn’t it?
We grow up thinking we have forever.
But forever turns into years…
And years turn into moments we can’t get back.
Hold your people close.
Because one day, one of you will be the last one standing, and you won’t
realize how much that mattered until it’s too late.

Happy 19th Blogiversary to Me

 Happy 19th Blogiversary to Me

On Tuesday, November 7, 2007, I wrote my first entry on my new blog, Marian's Hunting Stories, etc., etc., etc., and this is what I said.

This is my first time to do this and just feeling my way through it all....my neighbor next door has a blog here and I enjoy reading her stuff....so....I thought I would start me one. I like to deer hunt, so I thought I would blog my hunting adventures.

Correction - This is my first time doing this, and I'm just feeling my way through it all. My neighbor next door has a blog here, and I enjoy reading her posts. I thought I would start myself one. I enjoy deer hunting, so I am blogging about my hunting adventures.

I'm three days late, but I wish myself a very happy blogiversary, marking 19 years of blogging. I have 11 blogs and here they are

I give a lot of credit for my blogging to my hunting friend, Rex Dean Howell (March 9, 1958- January 31, 2021) of Deer Camp Blog.  He told me back in 2007 to keep blogging because I had mentioned I was losing interest, and he advised me to continue blogging, as there were not many lady deer hunters at the time.  I'm glad I listened to him and miss him so much.

Rex Dean Howell and I are showing off his impressive deer mount.

Peak Wildlife Activity on Roads

Autumn roads become busier with deer, turkeys, and other animals moving across their ranges. Stay alert, use headlights wisely, and respect their presence. Driving with care keeps both wildlife and people safe through the season.

Vicksburg, MS, In Warren County

Part of Jefferson County will be added to the chronic wasting disease area in Mississippi. Hunters are asked to harvest more deer this year, up to the bag limit, due to the abundance of deer.

CWD. It is expected to move slowly to the south. 128 deer tested positive for CWD in the past year in this state.

Fred Bear Twice Married

Many people were unaware that Fred Bear was married twice.  It is known that Fred Bear was married twice.  His first wife was Ann Marie Thomas.  They married in 1927.  She was a skilled nurse and a very accomplished archer, excelling in both tournaments and field conditions.  They stayed married until 1945 and parted ways.

Marie was born in 1902 and lived until 1975 in Michigan.  She remarried after her divorce from Fred and lived in Michigan.

A picture of Fred and her.  They were hunting in Blaney Park.

Buck - 8 Yards Away

My Facebook friend, Mike Persichini, took this awesome picture of a buck recently in Michigan.  He said, "He is so used to me, I am almost lying on the ground to get this picture, 8 yards away!"

THE POEM THAT ONCE WAS US

THE POEM THAT ONCE WAS US

A little house with three bedrooms,
One bathroom and one car on the street;
A mower that you had to push
To make the grass look neat.
In the kitchen, on the wall
We only had one phone,
And no need to record things,
Someone was always home.
We only had a living room.
Where we would congregate;
Unless it was at mealtime
In the kitchen where we ate.
We had no need for family rooms
Or extra rooms to dine.
When meeting as a family
Those two rooms worked out just fine.
We only had one TV set.
And channels, maybe two,
But always, there was one of them
With something worth the view
For snacks, we had potato chips
That tasted like a chip.
And if you wanted a flavor
There was Lipton's onion dip.
Store-bought snacks were rare because
My mother liked to cook,
And nothing can compare to snacks
In Betty Crocker's book
Weekends were for family trips
Or staying home to play.
We all did things together,
Even go to church to pray.
When we did our weekend trips
Depending on the weather,
No one stayed at home because
We liked to be together.
Sometimes, we would separate.
To do things on our own,
But we knew where the others were
Without our own cell phones.
Then there were the movies
With your favorite movie star,
And nothing can compare
To watch movies in your car
Then there were the picnics
At the peak of the summer season,
Pack a lunch and find some trees
And never need a reason.
Get a baseball game together.
With all the friends you know,
Have real action playing ball
And no game video.
Remember when the doctor.
Used to be a family friend,
And didn't need insurance
Or a lawyer to defend?
The way that he took care of you
Or what he had to do,
Because he took an oath and strived
To do the best for you.
Remember going to the store.
And shopping casually,
And when you went to pay for it
You used your own money?
Nothing that you had to swipe
Or punch in some amount,
And remember when the cashier person
Had to really count?
The milkman used to drive a truck
And go from door to door,
And it was just a few cents more
Then, going to the store.
There was a time when mailed letters
Came right to your door,
Without a lot of junk mail ads
Sent out by every store.
The mailman knew each house by name
And knew where it was sent;
There were not loads of mail addressed
To "present occupant."
There was a time when just one glance
Was all that it would take,
And you would know the kind of car,
The model and the make
They didn't look like turtles
Trying to squeeze out every mile;
They were streamlined, with white walls, fins, and "skirts,"
And really had some style
One time, the music that you played
Whenever you would jive,
It was from a vinyl, big-holed record
Called a forty-five
The record player had a post
To keep them all in line,
And then the records would drop down
And play one at a time.
Oh sure, we had our problems then,
Just like we do today
And always we were striving,
To find a better way.
Oh, the simple life we lived,
Still seems like so much fun.
How can you explain the game,
"Just kick the can and run?"
And all us boys put baseball cards
Between our bicycle spokes;
And for a nickel, red machines
Had little bottled Cokes?
This life seemed so much easier;
Slower in some ways.
I love the new technology,
But I sure do miss those days.
So time moves on, and so do we,
And nothing stays the same;
But I sure love to reminisce
And walk down memory lane.
With all today's technology
We grant that it's a plus!
But it's fun to look way back and say,
Hey, look, guys, THAT WAS US!
