Doe

Did you know that female deer live in a structured, hierarchical family unit, and that they are very much creatures of habit? They routinely follow the same schedule day in and day out. They remain together across multiple generations. And while similar in appearance, each is unique in terms of looks, personality and attitude. While they are a common site within the Hudson Valley, and easily overlooked, with the exception of when they eat your favorite landscaping, they are far more interesting and complex then we give them credit for.
This doe I’ve known for more than a decade. She is the matriarch in my neighborhood and treats me as one of the herd. She will come running if I call to her, and loves it when I cut fresh maple tree branches or put fresh water in the bird bath. When you look into her eyes, you can see she has a beautiful spirit and soul. And despite all of this, and all the photo shoots we’ve done together, this is the kind of sass she gives me yesterday when trying to capture a great portrait. Unbelievable!
Thanks for looking. And while we’re all familiar with the phrase… “stop and smell the roses.” I say… “stop and watch the deer.”
UPDATE: Oh deer! Thank you to everyone that has taken a moment to like and comment on my post. The outpouring of stories, pictures, moments and memories is amazing. I’ve tried my best to keep up with the many comments, but it’s near impossible. And I just noticed that I can no longer reply, outside of an emoji. Just know that I am reading every one’s reply, and loving the many stories and pictures. Please keep them coming, as we need more of these feel good moments and a greater feeling of connection. Simply stated: THANK YOU!!!
